A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
